Omega supplementation

I usually recommend Omega supplementation to almost everyone, but especially people with Hypertension, Cholesterol, Diabetes, Thyroid disease, Constipation, IBS, Eczema, Psoriasis and Depression

Some people avoid fish because they don't like the taste or because of the potential for mercury contamination. If this is your situation, then you can do one of two things. You can increase your intake of plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids, or you can take omega-3 supplements.
Cold-water oily fish, like salmon, herring and tuna, are good sources for the omega-3 fatty acids, but there are plenty of plant-based sources of omega-3s you can eat if you don't want to consume fish. Plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids include flax seeds, canola oil, soy, walnuts and pumpkin seeds. Research suggests eating flax seeds may help to prevent cardiovascular disease, but the evidence is not as strong for flax as it is for fish oil and fish oil supplements.

Dietary modification to increase the consumption of cold-water fish (eg, salmon) rich in polyunsaturated fats may help to raise HDL-C. Capsules containing omega-3 fatty acids (1.48 g of docosahexaenoic acid + 1.88 g of eicosapentaenoic acid) have been formulated and are commercially available in some parts of the world (as Omacor). In a recent small study in patients with familial combined hyperlipidemia, treatment with this formulation for 8 weeks increased HDL-C by 8%, particularly the more buoyant HDL2 subfraction.
The Studies Look Promising…

The usual dose used in these studies ranges between 900 mg and 5 grams a day of a combination of EPA and DHA. In order to achieve this amount, one would need to consume a lot of fish. Therefore, supplements are typically used. Ingesting 900 mg of omega-3 fatty acids each day resulted in a 4-percent decrease in triglyceride levels after six months. The average effective dose used in most studies was between 2 to 4 grams, and this resulted in an average drop in triglycerides between 25 to 45 percent. The effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acids on triglycerides is dose-dependent, meaning that the more omega-3 fatty acids ingested, the lower your triglyceride levels will fall. This works best when following a healthy diet. Omega-3 fatty acids seemed to affect recently ingested triglycerides more. Additionally, individuals with extremely high triglyceride levels (greater than 500 mg/dL) seem to derive the most benefit from omega-3 fatty acid supplementation.

Also see my Niacin Blog for suggestions on increasing HDL.

You will notice that one of the supplements have CoQ10. It has been studied for congestive heart failure and I have recommended that people at future risk of heart disease add this to their regimen. You will need two of these to approach the content of the other products on this page. CoQ10 is known to be highly concentrated in heart muscle cells due to the high energy requirements of this cell type. For the past 14 years, the great bulk of clinical work with CoQ10 has focused on heart disease. Specifically, congestive heart failure (from a wide variety of causes) has been strongly correlated with significantly low blood and tissue levels of CoQ10. The severity of heart failure correlates with the severity of CoQ10 deficiency. It is naturally present in small amounts in a wide variety of foods but is particularly high in organ meats such as heart, liver and kidney, as well as beef, soy oil, sardines, mackerel, and peanuts. To put dietary CoQ10 intake into perspective, one pound of sardines, two pounds of beef, or two and one half pounds of peanuts, provide 30 mg of CoQ10.

Reasons you may not be losing weight on the hcg diet

1. Evaluate the tablespoon of Milk you are drinking.

Consider changing to goat, almond, soy, or rice milk. Milk contains hormones to promote quick growth and weight gain of the calf to enable it to survive on it's own at the earliest. A baby calf triples in weight within the first year of life so cow's milk has a high content of fat and hormones like insulin promoting growth factor (IGF). Because of this milk has been used for centuries as an invalid food to promote appetite and weight gain. It is an easily digestible, high protein food for those people who do not have a milk allergy or are not lactose intolerant. As it promotes weight gain, it predisposes to obesity, hormonal problems like diabetes, arteriosclerosis, hypertension and paralytic strokes. People with any of these conditions should avoid taking milk and other dairy products.
Non dairy milk
You may want to make sure you don't have a casein allergy by getting tested or an elimination diet.

2. You have a gluten allergy

Gluten allergies are relatively common. 1 in 111 adults (0.9%) have a gluten allergy. When people with gastrointestinal complaints were studied, 1 in 30 adults (3.3%) were found to have a gluten allergy. This makes a gluten allergy quite common, especially when people with chronically uncomfortable guts are considered.

Using digestive enzymes can be effective in minimizing the impact of gluten for those with gluten intolerance or gut injury.

Also, avoid the melba toast and grissini on the diet. Or you can replace them with gluten free crackers.

3. You have an allergy to any of the foods on the diet.

Most of the foods on this diet do not commonly trigger allergies. But you could be exposing yourself to #1 and #2… and it would not be impossible that you are eating or seasoning your food with something that is counterproductive. People can be allergic to spices. Try salt only and see how that works, or have your practitioner check your sensitivity to some spices and only use the ones you do not react to.

Allergy to strawberries is one of the most common of all fruit and vegetable allergies. When a person is allergic to this fruit, it is likely they are reacting to the birch pollen allergen that apples and peaches bring on.

4. You did not do a colon cleanse.

When doing the HCG diet it is highly recommended to do a colon cleanse. The hcg diet gets rid of stored fat fast, and fat stores toxins as well. By cleaning your colon and getting rid of excess toxins, you greatly aid your hcg diet plan. If your colon and liver are not up to speed, You cannot expect them to optimally help you shed weight. This one can be used during the diet.

5. Your adrenal glands may be functioning suboptimally.

Check your DHEA level, if it is low, a supplement may make your weight loss more effective.
DHEA is an adrenal hormone that also aids in increasing metabolism and burning fat and reducing stress.

6. You are still craving food and are eating things that are not allowed.

7. You are using lotion or some cosmetic that is not allowed. Try our coconut oil infused with essential oils. www.sexibalm.com 832-237-4200

8. Through readjustment of the normal pH balance in the body,

People who change their diets to maintain pH balance will likely notice a welcome side effect: weight loss. A pH balance diet is so effective for weight loss that there are several well-known pH balance weight loss programs in existence.

Balancing your diet - Acid/Alkaline

When food is metabolised by the body the end products are either acidic or alkaline. Acids are compounds of elements, which give away hydrogen ions, alkalines are compounds of elements which attract hydrogen ions. The body needs both acids and alkalines for its metabolism but we have more difficulty getting rid of acids than alkalines. One of the simplest ways to immediately create more alkalinity in your body is to drink so-called superfood powdered drinks. Choose a brand that contains ingredients with high alkaline values such as spinach, broccoli, carrot, wheatgrass, barley grass, chlorella, alfalfa and sprouted grain powders. Many of these ingredients are contained in Green cell Therapy.
Milk thistle, lactobacillus, and digestive enzymes are in Vitagreen (formerly known as Green cell therapy).

Other ingredients:

Wheat Grass juice powder, barley grass juice powder, chlorella, CoQ10, Carrot Juice Powder, Beet Juice Powder, Parsley Leaf Powder, Kale Juice Powder, Grape seed exract, Milk Thistle seed extract, Lycopene, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Quercetin, Dandelion Powder, Spinach Powder, Blue Green Algae, Bee Pollen Powder, Aloe Vera Powder, Flax Seed Powder, Lecithin, Green Tea Extract, Astralagus Powder, Royal Jelly, Brown Rice Powder, Lipase, Lactase, Amyalse, Protease, Bifidobacerium Longum, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Rhamnonsus, Lactobacillus Acidophilus

9. Yeast overload

Belly fat is more than just fat. Yeast causes abdominal bloating that can add an extra 5-7 inches that seems to appear out of nowhere. This can be devastating for someone who is on a diet and trying to lose weight and lose inches. If a woman says she has only been eating 1,000 calories a day for a week yet still gained weight a doctor tends to think she is not being truthful. However, if most of her diet is carbohydrates and sugar she may very well be growing yeast, which create a toxic build up and fluid retention to dilute the toxins. It’s a whole new way of looking at weight gain.

Besides bloating and toxic fluid build up, yeast can decrease thyroid function and lead to lowered metabolism, which is a well known cause of weight gain. Some yeast toxins can block hormone receptors and block hormone action.

10. You have a vitamin deficiency

I recommend that people load with Omega 3, Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin D prior to the diet. Take as much as you can on the loading days.

For the Omega 3, take at least two 1000 mg tablets with each meal for the three loading days.
According to the Journal of Obesity, recent studies have shown that supplementation with Omega 3 fish oil increased the number of fat calories burned in a single day.

Co enzyme Q10 and weight loss goes hand in hand. This increases the metabolism rate in our body which burns up the food that we eat, faster. This enzyme is present more in the liver, pancreas and the heart than in the lungs. The presence of CoQ10, not only improves the metabolism rate in our body, but it also improves the immune system. Deficiency of the co enzyme Q10, in an individual, reduces the level of metabolism due to which the person might face several problems related to weight.

Take calcium and B vitamins during the diet.

But for the next phase, and while you are on maintenance, heed the advice above.

11. Try a chromium supplement

Chromium that has been shown to reduce fat accumulation, reduce cholesterol, reduce triglycerides, and reduce blood sugar levels in those people who have adequate blood insulin levels. Over 30 hospital and university studies have been performed showing all of the positive effects of Chromium. It helps the body store and burn carbohydrate in the proper way so that you have more energy and less fat buildup in the body.

12. Did you fat load properly?

Hair growth herbal support for hormonal imbalances

Hair loss affect about 70% of women during perimenopause. The symptoms of perimenopause usually last for the whole menopause transition (until the mid 50's), but some women may experience them for the rest of their life. Menopause is not an illness, but a natural process in a woman's body. The symptoms of menopause are just indicators of changes between the hormones estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. These changes result in a hormonal imbalance in a woman's body and cause the common menopause symptoms. A woman can experience hair loss during other parts of her life also, hormonal imbalance is not always limited to the menopausal transition. Even men experience hair loss during andropause.

Hair loss occurs when the diet is inadequate in the B vitamins - especially B6, biotin, inositol and folic acid; and the minerals magnesium, sulfur and zinc. The B vitamins, especially B5 (pantothenic acid and B3 (niacin), are especially important for hair growth.

Certain essential amino acids are found to control the thinning and thickening of hair in laboratory animals. For example, when rats were fed a diet deficient in magnesium, they lost their hair in bunches. The situation was even more serious with some other B-vitamins. When rats were fed a diet low in biotin or inositol, they became hairless! This nutrient-deficient condition was found to be reversible. When the rats were fed a diet that was rich in B vitamins, it resulted in the complete restoration of hair.

Heavy intake of vitamin supplements, in some cases, have resulted in stimulating hair growth. Men deficient in vitamin B6 often lose their hair. When they are deficient in folic acid, some men became completely bald! As in case of animals, when normal intake of theses vitamins were restored, the hair also returned in most instances.

If your hair loss begins around the onset of menopause, you can maintain hormonal balance (and hence hair thickness) with herbs containing plant-based estrogens, such as dong quai (Angelica sinensis) or ashwaganda (Withania somnifera), suggests Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., a naturopath and author of Healthy Healing (Healthy Healing Publications, 1997). Other herbs that exert mild estrogenic effects include damiana (Turnera diffusa), black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) and sage (Salvia officinalis).

Some people believe that hair loss is a result of bad genes and stress. These may be true at some point but a healthier and thicker hair won’t just fall off your scalp just like that, right? There are lots of vitamins out there that can make your hair and nails thicker and your skin firmer. Why not start early and naturally thicken your hair strands before they start to get thin and fine?

For example, B vitamins—namely B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, biotin, folic acid, and so on can effectively prevent hair loss if taken regularly. Did you know that the majority of hair loss happens when a person’s diet is deficient in B vitamins? B vitamins are essential for hair regrowth, hair strengthening, and overall hair health, including scalp health. Without B vitamins, old and brittle hair will shed and no new hair follicles are made to replace fallen hair.

Other vitamins and minerals that are important to hair loss prevention include Vitamin A, C, and E and trace minerals such as manganese and zinc. Zinc stimulates hair growth by enhancing our body’s immune function. Vitamin E helps in better blood circulation all over our body, including our scalp. The more freshly oxygenated blood that passes through our scalp, the more the scalp can stimulate hair growth. Manganese controls levels of calcium, which in huge uncontrolled numbers can lead to hair loss.

If there’s one thing in nature that contains all of the above vitamins and minerals that are needed to prevent hair loss, it’s none other than the Acai Berry! Yes, it is one of today’s “super fruits” because of its abundant content of essential vitamins, minerals, and other bio-nutrients.

Essential fatty acids (flaxseed oil, primrose oil, and salmon oil are good sources) improves hair texture. Prevents dry, brittle hair. (Found in Female Balance and Fish oil)

Vitamin C aids in improving scalp circulation. It is important to maintain capillaries that carry blood to the follicles. (Found in Maqui/Resveratrol/Acai Ultimate)

Vitamin E increases oxygen uptake, which improves circulation to the scalp. It improves health and growth of hair. Since hair health is tied to the immune health, vitamin E is believed to stimulate hair growth by enhancing the immune function. (Found in Maqui/Resveratrol/Acai Ultimate)

Deficiency in zinc can contribute a lot to hair shedding because without zinc and other related minerals, you hair shafts get weakened, causing hair breakage and very slow hair regrowth. Zinc benefits for hair include promotion of cell reproduction, tissue growth and repair of broken tissues. It also maintains the oil-secreting glands that are attached to your hair follicles, thus decreasing their chances of falling off. (Zinc is found in Octovite)

Coenzyme Q10 - Improves scalp circulation. Increases tissue oxygenation. It is also very important for heart health. (Found in Fish Oil/Coenzyme Q10)

Incorporating green tea into your diet may help combat or help prevent hair loss. One of the most powerful antioxidants in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Studies conducted by the Saitama Cancer Center Research Institute in Japan and the Seoul National University College of Medicine both show evidence that EGCG stimulates hair growth. (Found in Maqui/Resveratrol/Acai Ultimate)

Ginkgo Biloba has been in use in China for more than 5 centuries, from last 2 decades even Europe is widely using this tree's extracts for various purposes. Ginkgo Biloba possess special property of helping regulate the blood circulation in a body, when the extract is taken. The use of Ginkgo Biloba will boost the blood flow to the peripheral parts of the body and the fine capillaries, both of which indicates scalp as one of the parts. The increased circulation will hence bring more oxygen and more nutrients to the scalp, these nutrients are basically essential vitamins A and E along with some other important nutrients which are in our blood after digestion but are not transported to the right place to act, just because of lack of circulation. So when a hair follicle gets it right amount of oxygen and necessary nutrients it will automatically start hair repair and will promote hair growth. (Octovite contains Gingko Biloba)

If your previous hair growth remedies have not worked, consider a vitamin and herbal combination therapy. Hair loss can be a feature of adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism, which are other hormonal imbalances. Be sure to consult your practitioner to rule out treatable causes of your hair loss.

Omega or DHA fortified foods

Omega-3 found in fortified eggs, margarine spread, mayonnaise with olive oil, salmon, canola oil, avocado oil, or olive oil and in peanut butter.

Everyone does not care for the taste of fish, or fish oil supplements, but for heart and pregnancy health, their are other ways to enhance intake of omega 3 or DHA.

Herbs for Endometriosis

Endometriosis, which is afflicts almost 10 percent of U.S. women, can be quite painful. Its symptoms include severe cramping, excessive menstrual bleeding, and intestinal gas, sometimes accompanied by depression and insomnia. The scarring that results from the misplaced tissue can lead to painful intercourse, infertility and bowel inflammation. Maqui/Resveratrol/Acai Ultimate contains ingredients with high ORAC values. The ORAC values (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) method has become the international standard for measurement of antioxidant capacity and other chemical substances.

Antioxidants are known to counteract the damage-causing free radicals which cause oxidative stress in the body. This oxidation has been a major factor in the progression of aging and disease. Antioxidants reduce inflammation and protect cells from damage which obviously lowers the risk of these diseases and improves the immune system.Resvita

The causes of endometriosis remain a mystery. Curiously, European women rarely get it. We do know that one of the risk factors is an abundance of estrogen. That is why endometriosis occurs mostly in women between the ages of 25 and 40, when estrogen accumulates at its highest levels. Endometriosis is exacerbated by anything that irritates the uterus, such as a pelvic infection, constipation, uterine fibroids or cancer, or the presence of an IUD or a tampon. Even ingesting caffeine, alcohol or fried foods increases the problem.

Imbalances in hormones within the body can be prompted by eating certain meats-such as beef derived from diary cows reared using excess use of hormones, eating the meat of chickens reared using hormone cocktails etc. Eating meat derived from such sources can place extra hormones in the body and these in turn can stimulate the excess release of these hormones in our bodies-adding to the imbalance and possibly triggering endometriosis. The occurrence of a retrograde menstruation in the body of certain women is still the most well received theory about the origin of endometriosis, when certain periods of the menstrual cycle are accompanied by the presence of excessive cramps, some endometrial tissues can be forced out from the cavity of the uterus and this can rise through the fallopian tubes covering them with abnormal growth. The endometrial tissues are carried by this "retrograde flow" and the abnormally placed tissues now quickly attaches itself to all the other organs and proceeds to multiply causing endometriosis.

Medical science offers us many theories about the cause, but no cure for this poorly understood disorder. Often, the recommended treatment for endometriosis is oral contraceptives, a hysterectomy or hormone therapy with a drug such as danazol or leupron, which suppress estrogen and initiates a false menopause complete with hot flashes, vaginal dryness and a decreased sexual drive.

Thankfully, many of the symptoms of endometriosis can be improved with herbs, but you must be patient. Many women who chose to treat this disorder herbally find that successful treatment takes weeks. For best results, work with a natural health care professional who has experience with this disorder and can help you develop a complete healing campaign that includes dietary changes. Acupuncture may also be of benefit.

Anyone who is considering beginning a course of alternative treatment should discuss this with their usual medical health care provider. Your doctor must know when you begin any therapies that may interfere with your other treatments. Some women report that natural remedies take longer to work than conventional drugs, but can be soothing.

Phytotherapy — a gentle approach to a complex issue. If you are like most of the women I see, you can probably benefit from an approach that incorporates phytotherapy. We’ve found the following medicinal herbs to be beneficial for women with symptoms of estrogen dominance:

Black cohosh
Ashwagandha
Chasteberry

Since an overabundance of estrogen is one contributing factor of endometriosis, vitex berries, which balance a woman's hormones, are a valuable herb in any endometriosis formula. Female Balance Ultimate contains this herb which is also known as "chasteberry".

Chasteberry has been used for centuries in Western and Chinese Medicine to treat female conditions, including endometriosis. Combined with Dong Quai it makes a powerful treatment for balancing hormones and reducing the pain of endometriosis. When Chasteberry is combined with Wild Yam it relaxes the uterus, reducing cramps and spasms.

In Europe, it's approved by the German Commission E for family physicians and gynecologists to use for menstrual conditions. In fact, a German study reported that 52% of women taking this herbs reported a complete reduction in symptoms. Another German study reported 93% of women noticing a significant decrease in PMS symptoms.

Dong Quai is also used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat female reproductive health complaints, including endometriosis, fibroids, PMS and infertility. Women with endometriosis find significant relief of their pain when taking dong quai, especially when mixed with the herb chasteberry, black cohosh or ginseng. All of these ingredients are contained in Female Balance. Female Balance Ultimate

Psychiatrists in China reported that Wild Yam reduces anxiety levels, and its anti inflammatory and anti spasmodic effects are excellent for maintaining uterine health. When combined with Chasteberry and Cramp bark, Wild Yam is a powerful natural remedy for immediate relief from endometriosis symptoms. Wild Yam is present in Female Balance.Female Balance Ultimate

Chinese researchers have found that motherwort increases the volume of blood circulation and stimulates uterine activity. The herb can help with such endometrial symptoms as late periods and clotted or sluggish menstrual flow.Female Balance Ultimate

Supplement the diet with fish or flaxseed oil to help to reduce pain symptoms and decrease inflammatory response.Fish Oil COQ10 with Omega 3

Vitamin E oils helps in easing fatigue and cramping which occurs during menstruation.

Nutritional supplements can help balance hormones and reduce estrogen levels. When used properly, they can dramatically reduce bleeding, pain, and cramps that may accompany fibroids and endometriosis. Taking supplements, however, does not mean that you can ignore your diet. The best approach for fibroids, endometriosis, and optimal health is to include healthy foods and follow an estrogen lowering diet.

Food and Nutrition: Supplement the diet with vitamin C, vitamin B-6, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, essential fatty acids. (Vitamin C and B6 are in Female Balance)

There is increasing evidence that chronic exposure to the environmental chemicals dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is associated with an increased prevalence and severity of endometriosis. Vitagreen is an important detoxification formula that can be used in conjunction with Female Balance. It can also be used separately if any of the ingredients in Female Balance are contraindicated for you or conflict with any medications you are already on.

The following ingredients are in Resvita Resveratrol in wine may reduce the growth of endometriosis, according to a 2009 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists study. Vitamin C - is well known for helping to boost the immune system and help provide resistance to disease. It is also used in the body to build and maintain collagen within the body. Vitamin A - is another immune system booster Vitamin E - plays an important role by increasing oxygen carrying capacities and also strengthens the immune system Selenium - when taken together with vitamin E has been reported to decrease inflammation associated with Endometriosis, as well as immune system booster. Endometriosis may be improved by grape seed. Endometriosis is primarily affected by the release of prostaglandins. Grape seed extract may be able to intervene by blocking the release of chemical, which causes pain and inflammation; grape seed is found in Resvita and Privita. Conventional treatment of endometriosis usually begins with estrogen suppression, which prevents the endometrium from growing. Drugs such as danazol, Lupron, or Arimidex are used, along with NSAIDs to decrease inflammation. Laparoscopic cautery is the next step, with hysterectomy being reserved for severe cases. A naturopathic doctor will also guide the patient in reducing estrogen, which stimulates endometrial growth, while increasing progesterone and androgens, which promote endometrial atrophy. However, naturopathic approaches are tailored to the individual because there is a great variety in how endometriosis presents. The statements and products referred to throughout this site have not been evaluated by the FDA. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or condition. If you have a health condition or concern, consult a physician or your alternative health care provider. Always consult a medical doctor before modifying your diet, using any new product, drug, or supplement.

PriVita is an herbal aromatase inhibitor and estrogen blocker.  Estrogen-dominant disorders such as endometriosis, cysts, fibroids and breast cancer respond to excess estrogen in the body. Treatment of these disorders, therefore, involves blocking the action of estrogen of the affected tissues.

Eleven ideas to Increase HDL Naturally

Low HDL levels are a strong predictor of heart disease risk in the general population.

Many studies show the link between low levels of HDL cholesterol and major cardiovascular complications.

Interest in boosting HDL (good cholesterol) is growing. New agents for raising HDL are being tested. But you needn’t wait for them — you can make lifestyle changes

In addition to exercise and quitting smoking, there are other easy maneuvers to increase your HDL naturally.

Desirable Cholesterol Levels:
Total cholesterol: Less than 200 mg/dL
Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol): Less than 100 mg/dL
High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ("good" cholesterol): 40 mg/dL or higher
Triglycerides: Less than 150 mg/dL

All adults age 20 and over should have their total blood cholesterol checked at least every 5 years. Blood cholesterol levels of under 200 mg/dl are called "desirable" and put you at a lower risk for heart disease. Unlike total cholesterol, the lower your HDL, the higher your risk for heart disease. A HDL level less than 35 mg/dl increases your risk of heart disease. The higher your HDL level, the better.

There are many natural alternatives to treating high cholesterol. This may be especially optimal to patients who are regulating their cholesterol levels with diet and exercise. Natural products reduce cholesterol levels by dissolving fat in the blood.

1. Carnitine has been seen to increase HDL levels. In some people, supplements of L-carnitine or acetyl-L-carnitine (about 1000 to 2000 mg. per day) will significantly increase HDL levels. This is more likely to be true in vegetarians, since meats are the primary natural source of dietary L-carnitine. Supplementary carnitine can also aid in weight loss.

2. Pantothine has been seen to increase HDL levels

3. Chromium has been seen to reduce LDL levels and increase HDL levels. Supplementary chromium polynicotinate can improve LDL/HDL ratios in some people. This is probably due to the beneficial effects of chromium on insulin resistance. A diet that maintains blood sugar levels at a moderately-low and stable level will also improve LDL/HDL ratios.

4. Omega-3 found in fortified eggs, smart balance spread, mayonnaise with olive oil, salmon, canola oil, avocado oil, or olive oil and in the fats found in peanut butter.
Because omega-3 fatty acids lower triglyceride levels, they may also increase HDL, the “good” cholesterol that protects against the development of heart disease. To effectively lower triglycerides, 2-4 grams of EPA + DHA are recommended daily. Research studies have shown that this amount lowered triglycerides approximately 25 percent to 35 percent.

For those with who require a cholesterol-lowering drug, it is mandatory to take at least 60 mg. of coenzyme Q-10 daily since all statin drugs block the liver's production of coenzyme Q-10. Coenzyme Q-10 is a substance essential for proper muscle functioning, especially functioning of the heart muscle. The fish oil product at the bottom of the page contains 30 mg Coenzyme Q10 per capsule, so two would be needed to meet this minimum.

5. Well-designed studies have found that niacin lowers LDL cholesterol by approximately 10%, lowers triglycerides by 25%, and raises "good" HDL cholesterol by 15% to 30%. Niacin also appears to significantly lower levels for another risk factor for atherosclerosis, lipoprotein A.

6. Green Tea - Popular in Asia for centuries, green tea helps to keep blood pressure under control. It also may help keep cholesterol from clogging arteries. The tea contains Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) and other substances that protect the body against the dangers of oxidation, while helping to keep the harmful LDL cholesterol down and the helpful HDL cholesterol up. They also assist in keeping blood pressure under control.

7. Onions: Onions contain adenosine and other "blood thinners" that help to prevent the formation of blood clots. In addition to thinning the blood, onions can help keep the coronary arteries open and clear by increasing the HDL. Eating half a raw onion every day can increase HDL by 20 to 30 percent.

8. Five to 10 grams a day of soluble fiber has been found to decrease LDL cholesterol by approximately 5%.

9. Brewer's Yeast: Brewer's yeast can lower the total cholesterol and LDL while raising the helpful HDL.

10. Cranberry juice has been shown to increase HDL levels.

11. Octovite contains Vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene, alpha lipoic acid, and fish oil.

To reduce oxidation of cholesterol from LDL, you need at least 100 units of vitamin E, 5,000 units of beta carotene (and/or 5 mg. lycopene), and 500 mg. of vitamin C per day, along with other dietary antioxidants. Alpha lipoic acid or R-lipoic acid may be an even more important antioxidant. Lipoic acid, when taken throughout the day, can lower blood sugar levels significantly. This can cause a significant beneficial increase in HDL. It is important to get a broad spectrum of fat-soluble and water-soluble antioxidants. Many single antioxidants, taken alone, will actually generate free radicals that must be de-activated by other antioxidants.

A very important antioxidant in preventing heart disease and many cancers is lycopene, which is very similar to beta carotene, but which has finally become available in pure form as a nutritional supplement. The best food sources of lycopene are canned tomato juice, or juices such as V8 that are high in tomato juice.

Fibromyalgia herbal ideas for relief of symptoms

There are no known cures for fibromyalgia, due to the fact that the cause is unknown. Theories suggest the condition may be due to chemical or hormone imbalances.

However there are treatments that can help alleviate the various fibromyalgia symptoms.

Counseling
Exercise (especially yoga)
Nutrition therapy
Detoxification (Like Parasite Cleansing, Colon Cleansing)
Herbal Therapy

Herbs can be used to help alleviate fibromyalgia by reducing inflammation, stimulating hormones, providing immune system support and eliminating pain.

Herbal remedies are often used effectively in people suffering from fibromyalgia. Herbs can help to treat the wide range of symptoms produced by the syndrome, including:

depression
fatigue and sleep disorders
widespread muscle pain
immune deficiency

St. John's Wort St. John's wort is a natural antidepressant and influences the adrenal gland hormones to help relieve stress. St. John's wort affects nerves and is effective for sharp, shooting nerve pains. It also has antiviral properties. (Caution: Do not take if you are taking conventional antidepressants.)

*Echinacea and Borage Oil are remedies that have been tried. Willow bark has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used as a painkiller.

*Magnesium is a mineral found naturally in foods such as green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains and in nutritional supplements. Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions. Magnesium, along with malic acid (a fruit acid found naturally in apples) are often suggested for people with fibromyalgia because they are both needed for the generation of energy in cells in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

*The supplement 5-HTP is thought to work by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. There is preliminary evidence that it may reduce the number of tender points in people with fibromyalgia, possibly by effecting pain-modulating systems in the brainstem.

This supplement also contains Passionflower which Helps with insomnia, stress, and anxiety.
Valerian, chamomile, and passionflower in combination can be more effective than valerian alone for improved sleep. All three are also contained in Herbalith

Green foods should be added for optimal nutrition. (My green foods supplement contains Quercetin, digestive enzymes, CoQ10, Grape seed extract, Alpha Lipoic acid, lactobacillus and astragalus) see "GREEN CELL THERAPY"

Astragalus-Astragalus has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Its main use has been to boost the body's immune system

Alpha Lipoic acid is very useful for enhancing the body's utilization of carbohydrates and enhancing energy. Take 100 milligrams three times daily.

Grape-seed extracts are natural anti-inflammatories that help to ease pain

Quercetin is a bioflavonoid considered to have excellent properties as a natural antihistimine and allergy-fighter.

People with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndromes that have started a digestive enzyme regime often show and improvement in their symptoms. This is because the regimen provides enzymes that the body lacks, and promotes cell nutrition by nourishing the nervous system and digestive system.

Coenzyme Q10 is also an antioxidant and helps deliver oxygen to cells. (It can be found in combination with Fish oil or Omega-3 fatty acids)

Omega-3 Fatty Acids - especially those found in fish oil, omega-3 fatty acids can decrease inflammation and allergic response.

The scientific community will continue to discover more specific causes for auto immune disorders but at present there are four significant factors that have been proven to cause fibromyalgia like symptoms, they are:
1. Viral infections
2. Parasite infestations
3. Bacterial infections
4. Intestinal yeast infections

OCTOCLEANSE Herbal Parasite Detox may be of interest to you it contains:
Black walnut aid in removing parasites.
Paud'arco, taken in tea or tablet form, is good for treating candida infection.

Antioxidants help reduce free-radical damage and fight inflammation. Take a good antioxidant formula that provides daily:

5,000 to 10,000 International Units of vitamin A
Up to 10,000 milligrams of buffered vitamin C
400 to 800 international units of vitamin E
200 micrograms of selenium.

OCTOVITE Ultimate Herbal Antioxidant contains A, C, E in addition to:

Gingko Biloba-Ginkgo biloba stimulates circulation, particularly in the brain. Because of the increase circulation and oxygenation of the brain cells, produced by the extract from ginkgo leaves, this plant has given excellent results for combating fatigue.

Ginseng-Siberian ginseng is an energizing herb that can help resolve the fatigue associated with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia pain is thought to be produced by a combination of factors. These fibromyalgia factors include imbalances in brain and body chemistry. Disturbed sleep, a symptom of fibromyalgia, is also thought to be a cause. Though the degree of pain fibromyalgia can produce varies with individual sufferers, it's not progressive or debilitating. However, chronic fibromyalgia pain sets off a chain reaction of physical and mental side effects. The persistent stress of chronic fibromyalgia pain can affect the nervous and immune system. Coping with chronic fibromyalgia pain can also bring on depression and cause the brain to perceive even more pain.

What I have recommended to patients, is to maintain health with natural pain relievers that also boost the immune system.
Resveratrol, a phytochemical derived from grape skin, is also abundant in members of the Polygonum genus, widely used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. The anti-inflammatory effects of resveratrol were first described in 1997 after an animal model determined its primary activity to be the inhibition of COX-1. Then a study led by some of the same researchers from Cornell Medical College in New York City revealed resveratrol's COX-2 inhibitory effects.
Green Tea is also in this supplement. There is a compound in green tea called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) that University of Michigan researchers found to alleviate arthritis pain.

Maqui/Resveratrol/Acai Ultimate is a supplement that contains both of these ingredients. This product underwent ORAC analysis at Brunswick Labs.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia respond to many of the same treatments. Fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) have many similarities. Although the two illnesses have many symptoms in common, the most prevalent symptom of FM is widespread pain while the primary symptom of CFS is extreme fatigue that does not improve with rest.

Autism and Pregnancy

If a couple already has a child with autism, the possibility of having another one is approximately 8 percent. Autism Spectrum Disorders are sometimes treated with nutrient supplementation. If you have a previous child with autism, or a family member with autism, you may consider tailoring your supplement intake to include the supplements given to treat autism to give yourself the extra "edge".

Neither a disease nor a mental illness, autism is a behavioral syndrome that originates early in life, possibly well before birth. Many children with autism are deficient in digestive enzymes, resulting in poor digestion and inadequate absorption of nutrients. Research published by the Defeat Autism Now! Project (DAN!) on the “Nutritional Status of Autistic Children”, and also by Tim Buie, M.D. of the Harvard Pediatric Gastroenterology Department, and others shows that most autistic children have a number of nutritional deficiencies. For example, low vitamin B6, zinc, vitamins A and D, folate, vitamin B12, biotin, low B1, B3, and B5 function, low methionine levels, and low levels of essential fatty acids such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, a component of omega-3 fatty acid) and GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid), abnormal mineral levels, and many others.

The B12, biotin, B1, B3, and B5 can often be found together in a complex formulation, and in liquid and sublingual forms.

Magnesium supplementation during pregnancy has also been studied for brain development enhancing properties, so it would be great to make sure you are getting this in your prenatal vitamin.

Magnesium and vitamin B6 have been used the longest for autism, with good effect. The upper safe limit in pregnancy of Magnesium is 350 mg and Vitamin B6 is 100 mg.

Most prescription prenatal vitamins have adequate B6, vitamins A and D, folate, and vitamin B12. Some include DHA and or EPA, so make sure you do not miss this supplement. It is available separately if you are not currently taking it. Some have biotin and zinc, check your supplement to see if you need to take these separately. They are widely available and inexpensive.

Vitamin B12: This vitamin is becoming very popular and is available orally, sublingually, or an IM injection. In addition to helping neurochemistry, it increases glutathione antioxidant status.

Folate: Another enzyme important for neurochemistry function, the methylated folate (5-MTHF) is indicated in autism. The methylating enzyme, dihydrofolate reductase, can be inhibited in autism. Your carrier status of this enzyme deficiency can be assessed by a simple blood test. See my blog on MTHFR.

Zinc: Wonderful for the immune system, zinc also balances copper in the body. The copper level in autistic children is usually high, and can be removed with supplemental zinc.

Antioxidants: Inflammation causes oxidation, which destroys the body, even the neurons. Most children with autism have decreased antioxidant levels. A plethora of antioxidants are available, including Vitamins A, C, E, Selenium, Zinc, CoQ10.

Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant. It helps to regenerate stores of other antioxidants like Vitamin C and E. It also protects both mother and fetus from the damaging effects of free radicals and oxidative stress. Many pregnancy complications and birth defects have been linked to oxidative stress, free radical damage and low glutathione levels in the mother and fetus.Glutathione can be obtained from food sources like Watermelon, Avocado, Asparagus, Broccoli, Grapefruit, Strawberry, Orange and Tomato.

Although clinical studies appear to be lacking, some naturopathic practitioners believe that intestinal malfunctioning may contribute to autism symptoms. If this is true, then supplementing with digestive enzymes may help to boost the body's natural digestive process. If you suffer from heartburn, gallstones, or are lactose intolerant... you may find additional benefits to taking digestive enzymes.

I have a Calcium/Magnesium/Vitamin D/Zinc supplement and a Coenzyme Q10/Omega 3 supplement that many of my patients add to their prenatal regimen. They are taking it for reasons not related to Autism, as I usually suggest it for hypertension and preeclampsia prophylaxis.
