Mushroom coffee, ganoderma, cordyceps

Medicinal mushrooms are mushrooms used in the practice of medicine.

Many species of mushrooms have been used in folk medicine for thousands of years and is best documented in the East. Medicinal mushrooms are now being studied by many ethno botanists and medical researchers. The ability of some of these mushrooms to inhibit tumor growth and enhance aspects of the immune system has been a subject of research for approximately the past 50 years. Preclinical studies suggest that compounds from up to 200 species of mushrooms may inhibit or slow down tumor growth, but required dosage and effects on humans is mostly unknown. Fungus research has led to the discovery of many pharmaceutical drugs, including penicillin, ciclosporin, griseofulvin, cephalosporin, ergometrine as well as the popular statin class of cholesterol reducing drugs. What Is Ganoderma? More commonly known as reishi, ganoderma is a hard, bitter mushroom used to promote health and longevity in traditional Chinese medicine. Proponents claim that ganoderma can relieve fatigue, keep cholesterol in check, curb high blood pressure, tame inflammation, build stamina, and support the immune system. It can be consumed as a delicious coffee. OrganoGold

 Cordyceps Fungus Health Benefits

Although written record of Cordyceps sinensis use appeared in Traditional Chinese Medicine centuries ago, it wasn't really noticed in the West until recently. The last two decades have seen a great increase in research on cordyceps as a medicinal mushroom.

There are many reported cordyceps health benefits.

Some of these include:
 Cholesterol reduction
Stimulation of the immune system
Faster recovery from bronchitis and respiratory diseases
Increased efficiency and stamina of the circulatory system
Anti-tumor properties
Liver protection and enhanced recovery from chemotherapy
Sexual potentiator (Hmmmm......)
A general body adaptogen, resulting in more energy, strength, and stamina
The reasons behind some of these benefits are still not fully understood.
Yet research has found some promising proof behind cordyceps claims.
A few of the helpful constituents found are:
Sterols - Alcohols of the steroid group. Believed to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease, and possibly have some anti-tumor properties.
Polysaccharides - Complex carbohydrates made up of chains of sugars. Known to stabilize blood pressure, have an effect on free radicals, and stimulate the immune system. cordyceps coffee

Plant Sterols in foods and enhanced products

Plant sterols and stanols are substances that occur naturally in small amounts in many grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Since they have powerful cholesterol-lowering properties, manufacturers have started adding them to foods. You can now get stanols or sterols in margarine spreads, orange juice, cereals, and even granola bars.

On a molecular level, sterols and stanols look a lot like cholesterol. So when they travel through your digestive tract, they get in the way. They can prevent real cholesterol from being absorbed into your bloodstream. Instead of clogging up your arteries, the cholesterol just goes out with the waste.

The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends that people who have high cholesterol get 2 grams of stanols or sterols a day.

The effects of naturally-occurring plant sterols on cholesterol metabolism have also been studied in both older and more recent literature. It was reported that the differences between effects of different plant oils on blood lipid profiles may be related to their content of plant sterols.

Indeed, there has been renewed interest in the cholesterol lowering properties of speciality grains and unprocessed oils rich in plant sterols including amaranth oil, rice bran oil, 100% Certified Organic Avocado Oil 16 fl oz (473 ml) Liquid, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Macadamia Oil, and Argan Oil.

Also, it was shown that the consumption of original Wheat Germ, which contains about 328 mg plant sterols, reduced the cholesterol absorption by 42.8 % compared to plant sterol-free wheat germ. These results indicate that naturally available plant sterols are biologically effective as plant sterol supplementation in reducing cholesterol absorption, and that natural plant sterols have important effects on cholesterol metabolism.

Commercially, plant sterols are currently contained in bars (Benecol Smart Chews, Caramel), vegetable oils, orange juice (cardio juice heart healthy), mayonnaises, yogurt drinks (Benecol), Pacific Natural Foods Select Soy Non-Dairy Beverage Vanilla, 32-Ounce Containers (Pack of 12), and green teas
(Triple Leaf Tea, Tea Bags, Cholesterid, 1.34-Ounce Box, 20-Count Boxes (Pack of 6)).
Health King Cholesterol Guard Herb Tea, Teabags, 20-Count Box (Pack of 4)
Cholesterol Management Herbal Tea Remedy, 100 tea bags

Plant sterols are also being sold or developed mixed with other functional ingredients such as: almonds, soy protein and viscous fibers; and minerals. There is also interest to combine plant sterols with antioxidants, such as flavonoids, quercetins, and catechin.

Probiotics, a comparison and shopping guide

A probiotic is an organism which contributes to the health and balance of the intestinal tract. A probiotic is also referred to as the "friendly", "beneficial", or "good" bacteria which when ingested acts to maintain a healthy intestinal tract and help fight illness and disease.

You can add probiotics to your diet through nutritional supplements or foods such as yogurt, fermented and unfermented milk, miso, and some juices and soy drinks. Read product labels carefully, looking for a statement that the product contains "live and active cultures," such as lactobacillus.

Although more research is needed, there's encouraging evidence that probiotics may help:

Treat diarrhea, especially following treatment with certain antibiotics
Prevent and treat vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections
Treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Speed treatment of certain intestinal infections
Prevent and treat eczema in children
Prevent or reduce the severity of colds and flu
Some researchers believe probiotics may improve general health.

Most people can safely add probiotic foods to a healthy diet. If you're considering taking probiotic supplements, check with your doctor to make sure the supplements are right for you.Align and Culturelle are probably the two most commonly know probiotic supplements so it is important to understand the differences between them.

The most important point to remember is that each of these supplements contain a different probiotic.

Culturelle Lactobacillus GG, Inulin (prebiotic)
