Supplements for adjunctive immune help for cancer patients

Alternative cancer treatments may not cure your cancer, but they may provide some relief from signs and symptoms. The holistic treatment for cancer should focus on immune system stimulation, correction of the internal disease process, and destruction of the mutated cellular growth with natural nontoxic compounds. Some tumors grow in response to sugar, some are hormone responsive, and different people and their cancers have unique needs. Consult with your physician to choose the most beneficial combination for your condition.

 1. Essiac tea RenĂ© Caisse, a Canadian nurse, treated thousands of cancer patients for sixty years using an herbal drink popular with the Ojibway Indians. In 1937 the Royal Cancer Commission of Canada conducted hearings concerning Essiac ('Caisse' backwards) and pronounced as its conclusion that the preparation had marked anti-cancer properties.

 2. b17
B17 Laetrile is a partly man made (synthetic) form of the natural substance amygdalin. Amygdalin is a plant substance found naturally in raw nuts and the pips of many fruits, particularly apricot pips, or kernels. It is also present in plants such as lima beans, clover and sorghum. Some people call laetrile vitamin B17, although it isn’t a vitamin. There is no scientific evidence to support claims that laetrile or amygdalin can treat cancer or any other illness. Despite this it has been promoted as an alternative cancer treatment. Alternative treatment means that people use it instead of conventional cancer treatment. The first use of laetrile as a treatment for cancer was in Russia in 1845, and it was used in the USA from the 1920s. In the 1970s, laetrile was widely promoted as an anti cancer agent either on its own or as part of a programme with a particular diet, high dose vitamin supplements, and pancreatic enzymes.

 3. IP6/Maitake IP-6 and Inositol: dramatically increases natural killer-cell activity and enhances normal cell division. Maitake: clinically shown to support cell growth and keep your body's immune response healthy and balanced. POA Cat's Claw: clinically studied to benefit natural and acquired immune systems. Enhances the protective power of critical B- and T-cells.
Cell Forte

 4. Modified Citrus Pectin
Proponents claim that modified citrus pectin slows or stops the growth of melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer, and metastatic prostate cancer (prostate cancer that has spread). Some also claim that a compound found in MCP strengthens the cancer cell–killing ability of T-cells, cells that also protect against germs.  Modified citrus pectin

5. Pacific Yew tree Powerful plant compounds called taxanes are contained naturally in the Pacific Yew tree. A taxane is a unique plant phytochemical that has revolutionized modern medicine and alternative therapies with its ability to destroy abnormal cells by binding the microtubules and preventing them from disintegrating. This action has been found to paralyze cell division and permanently inhibit the growth of abnormal cells. Abnormal cells are unable to signal apoptosis and die naturally.
Consult your doctor if you are already on chemotherapy for any supplement, but especially this one, as Taxol is derived from this compound. Vital Yew

6. Resvita  contains turmeric and astralagus Scientists tell us that vitamins A, C, and E, as well as beta carotene and other antioxidant bioflavonoids, are vitally important to good health. Antioxidants have about 20 times the power of Vitamin C and 50 times that of Vitamin E. Resvita contains antioxidants that are broad-spectrum. Resvita contains antioxidants from maritime pine bark and grape seed pycnogenols extracts.

 7. Privita - estrogen blocker and aromatase inhibitor for estrogen dependent cancers breast, prostate, ovarian, uterine, cervical.

Chrysin – A flavonoid from the passion flower plant, which acts as an antioxidant, inhibits 6 of 7 pro-cancer events, enhances Tumor Necrosis Factor, and inhibits abnormal hormone action (Boik, 2001; Yin, 1999).

3,3’Diindolymethane (DIM) – A phyto-chemical from cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, etc.) with strong anti-estrogen effects, inhibits adhesion, motility, and invasiveness of cancer cells, inhibits 5 of 7 pro- cancer events (Riby, 2000).

Resveratrol – Stilbene from grapes and wine which acts as an antioxidant, inhibits platelet aggregation, inhibits 6 of the 7 pro-cancer events, inhibits insulin resistance, and inhibits abnormal estrogen action (Boik, 2001; Neilson, 2000).

Green Tea Extract (GTE) – A group of flavonoids that acts as an antioxidant; inhibits 6 of the 7 pro-cancer events; and has in-vitro and in-vivo anticancer activity (Boik, 2001; Lyn-Cook, 1999; Sabzuka, 2000).

Quercetin – A flavonoid from fruits and vegetables which acts as an antioxidant, inhibits abnormal hormone activity, inhibits 6 of the 7 pro-cancer events (Boik, 2001; De, Chakraborty, 2000; Lamson, 2000).

Turmeric Extract – The extract is curcumin, which acts as an antioxidant, strong anti- inflammatory effect, inhibits insulin resistance, inhibits cancer cellular proliferation, inhibits metastasis, inhibits 5 of the 7 pro-cancer events (Arbiser, 1998; Boik, 2001; Dorai, 2000). CURCUMIN: Curcumin (diferuloyl methane), the yellow pigment in turmeric (Curcuma Longa), is a potent herbal preventive agent that inhibits proliferation of cancer cells by arresting them at various phases of the cell cycle depending upon the cell type. Curcumin-induced apoptosis mainly involves the mitochondria-mediated pathway in various cancer cells of different tissues of origin. Several factors including pharmacological safety, scope for improvement of structure and function of curcumin and its ability to attack multiple targets are in favour of curcumin being developed as a drug for prevention and therapy of various cancers.

ASTRAGALUS: The immuno-potentiating effect of the roots of Astragalus Membranaceus, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, has been associated with its polysaccharide fractions (plant sugars). These compounds are known to enhance immune cell communications thus enabling the body to better defend itself against disease. Astragalus extract has profound effects in enhancing human immuno-function and anti-tumour activity.

 8. Vitagreen - pH balance Barley Grass therapy consists primarily of detoxification and consuming a wheat-grass drink several times each day. Fresh barley grass in this form is a potent source of many vitamins, minerals and plant enzymes. Thus, it is said to be nature's own nutritional program. Wheat grass and barley grass also contain Vitamin B17 (Amygdalin/Laetrile), although other sources, such as apricot seeds are more potent.

9. Octovite contains ginkgo biloba for the brain and circulatory system; vitamins A, C, and E, fish oil, and N acetyl cysteine

10. Oxygen
Low oxygen levels in cells may be a fundamental cause of cancer. There are several reasons cells become poorly oxygenated. An overload of toxins clogging up the cells, poor quality cell walls that don't allow nutrients into the cells, the lack of nutrients needed for respiration, poor circulation and perhaps even low levels of oxygen in the air we breathe. Liquid Oxygen Drops

Seven Ways to manage Hidradenitis suppurativa

Seven Ideas to manage Hidradenitis Supperativa
you can also use these suggestions for boils and cysts under your arms or in the genital area

Hidradenitis is a chronic disease of the apocrine glands (sweat glands found on certain parts of the body) and hair follicles. These glands become plugged or clogged. The condition causes chronic scarring and pus formation in the underarm, groin and/or inner thigh areas. In women it can also occur under the breasts. Hidradenitis begins with a red, tender swelling in the groin or armpit. Over time the lesions enlarge and burst open at the surface, draining clear to yellow fluid. The poorly understood disease is under-reported by those who suffer from it. However, there is some research suggesting changes in diet, warm compresses and baths, and some supplements can relieve symptoms, bring about remission, and/or minimize recurrence.

If you or anyone in your family suffer from recurrent "boils" or "abscesses", it is possible that you or they have Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Treatment of Hidradenitis Suppurativa remains a challenge.

Therapeutic options for Hidradenitis Suppurativa are the use of local disinfectants and systemic antibiotics, as well as repeated incisions and drainage, which produce only short-term benefits. Medical management is recommended in early stages, whereas surgery should be performed as early as possible after the formation of abscesses, fistulas, scars and sinus tracts.

1. Vitamin C and Fish Oil are contained in Octovite- it also contains vitamins A and E.  All of these supplements are great for skin healing.

 2. Turmeric- apply topically as a paste or take capsules. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used for 4,000 years to treat a variety of ailments. Test tube and animal studies suggest turmeric may have antibacterial and antiviral properties, but whether it would be effective in humans is unclear.  It is also used for its anti inflammatory properties.

It is also found in Privita (see below)

 3. Hormones- Combined treatment of antiandrogen, cyproterone acetate, and estradiol have been shown to be of benefit to women with long standing Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Treatment with antiandrogen cyproterone acetate in combination with estrogen ethinyl estradiol in combination with low-dose progestin norgestrel may significantly improve disease activity, especially in patients with mild forms of Hidradenitis Suppurativa, but many conditions fail to respond to theses treatments.

Naturally Balance Hormone levels with Privita, it can naturally balance estrogen levels.

 4. Herbs with antibacterial and antifungal activity-  Octocleanse

Yeast or bacteria can be a catalyst in the lesions.  There are herbal cleanses that can provide support for both agents and can help remove the offending agent, that often cannot be identified.

 5.  Vitagreen

Definitely consider if your body pH may be altered, as this makes many people prone to acne, cysts and infections, in addition to reducing your sugar consumption, this supplement contains many ingredients like chlorella and wheatgrass, that help alkalinize the body.
Probiotics are also contained in this supplement to help restore and rebalance skin flora.

Vaginal Maintainence, Chronic Yeast, Bacterial Vag...

 6. Get your vitamin D levels tested.

Low vitamin D appears to be linked with many autoimmune conditions and recurrent infections.

 7. You can also try applying organic virgin coconut oil to the skin. It has powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agents and is very good for the skin and more (see more coconut oil benefits). Tea tree is also helpful also, but may burn if used full strength. Look for Sexibalm which combines Coconut oil, tea tree oil, green tea, and many other ingredients that are beneficial for managing skin bacteria.

Breast Health Supplement Suggestions

The key strategy in the primary prevention of any disease is to reduce risk factors linked to the disease while simultaneously utilizing those dietary and lifestyle factors associated with breast cancer prevention. While many women are on a multivitamin, it is worth considering a regimen of supplements more specific to the breast. You can start with one, or a combination of these supplements.

 1. Privita has been ORAC tested by Brunswick Labs Estrogen stimulates the normal growth of breast tissue and is naturally produced by the body. It is suspected that excess estrogen may contribute to breast cancer risk because of its natural role in stimulating breast cell growth. Removal of a woman's ovaries (artificial menopause), and the estrogen that ovaries produce, clearly reduces her risk for breast cancer. But there are other ways to decrease risk without surgery. Aromatase inhibitors stop the production of estrogen in post-menopausal women. Aromatase inhibitors work by blocking the enzyme aromatase, which turns the hormone androgen into small amounts of estrogen in the body. This means that less estrogen is available to stimulate the growth of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer cells. Privita is a natural aromatase inhibitor and estrogen blocker formula that contains many ingredients that have been studied for breast cancer.

Includes Resveratrol, Pomegranate, DIM, Green Tea, Grape seed Extract, Astralagus, Chamomile, Quercetin, Reishi Mushroom, Turmeric and Nutgrass in the formula
Resveratrol, found in red wine, keeps estrogen from causing breast cancer in test-tube studies. Prolonged exposure to estrogen is a major risk factor for breast cancer. When the body's system for processing estrogen gets out of balance, dangerous estrogen metabolites appear. These toxic compounds react with DNA in breast cells and jump-start the growth of tumors. Now Eleanor G. Rogan, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Nebraska show that resveratrol decreases the processing of estrogen into these dangerous compounds.
Chrysin Found in the herb Passiflora incarnata, the flavone chrysin is a potent natural aromatase inhibitor. In a study published 1993 chrysin and 10 other flavonoids were compared to an aromatase-inhibiting drug (aminoglutethimide). Chrysin was the most potent aromatase-inhibitor, and was shown to be similar in potency and effectiveness to the aromatase-inhibiting drug.
Dim (Di-Indoly Methane). These compounds, found in cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collards and broccoli, help to transform dangerous estrogen into more benign forms, as recognized by the National Cancer Institute.
Quercetin  Research has suggested that quercetin has other anti-cancer benefits aside from inhibiting aromatase in breasts and prostates.
Pomegranate seed extract works as an aromatase inhibitor. Lansky with a group of Korean researchers in 2002 had already shown that his various pomegranate fractions could lower aromatase activity by 70-80%. Aromatase inhibitors suppress the production of estrogens. If you have hormone dependent breast cancer this is certainly a worthwhile goal. Preventing estrogen formation has its downside though. Without estrogen, bone density rapidly declines increasing the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. Pomegranates contain estrogen like chemicals and these may be enough to prevent osteoporosis. At least this is true in mice. In May 2004, Japanese researchers published a study on mice in which they had surgically removed the ovaries. Treating them with pomegranate extracts increased their bone volumes.

 2. Protective Breast Formula™ It supports breast tissue health in 5 ways.† Protective Breast Formula™ supports hormonal balance, detoxification, immune support, free-radical defense and natural anti-inflammatory response.†Each ingredient provides demonstrated breast health support.†The natural immune boosters and antioxidants in Protective Breast Formula™ include: Indoplex® Complex with DIM®, green tea extract, maitake D-fraction, turmeric, vitamin D3 cholecalciferol, and grape seed extract. When used in conjunction with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle choices, these ingredients provide superior support for breast tissue health.

 3. Myomin There are two ways to block the action of estrogen. One is by attaching to its receptors (selective estrogen receptor modulation). This stops the signaling that triggers cell division in target tissues. Another method is aromatase inhibition, which reduces estrogen production by blocking its conversion from androstenedione and testosterone. Myomin - 120 caps,(Chi's Enterprise) is an all-natural herbal formula that can perform both functions. It contains Aralia, Smilax glabra, Curcurma zedoria, and Cyperus rotundus.

 4. Vitamin D in order for vitamin D to have an anticancer effect, one needs to maintain 40 to 60 ng/mL serum vitamin D. Usually 5000 IU to 10,000 IU daily will be necessary.

5.Coenzyme Q10 and Fish Oil- Coenzyme Q10 is low in patients with many disease including cancer. Given its function as an antioxidant, there is good reason to believe that CoQ10 may also help fight many kinds of cancer

Breast Thermography awareness

According to the National Cancer Institute, there were 192,370 new cases of breast cancer in females and 1,910 cases in males in 2009. That year, 40,170 women and 440 men died from breast cancer. The World Health Organization reports that breast cancer accounts for 16 percent of the cancer deaths of women globally.

Breast thermography is a state-of-the-art screening procedure that captures images of the breast to aid in the early detection of breast irregularities. According to the American Journal of Surgery, it “is a valuable adjunct to mammography and ultrasound, especially in women with dense breast parenchyma.”

It is based on the principle of temperature variation, the slight increase in heat that is almost always generated when chemical and blood vessel activity occurs in pre-cancerous tissue and the areas surrounding a developing breast cancer. Images are captured with ultra-sensitive infra-red cameras and analyzed with sophisticated computers that seek to detect the minute increases in surface temperature and vascular changes that may be occurring within the breast. It is comfortable and safe, using neither radiation nor compression.

Breast thermographic technology has been researched for over 30 years. It has, however, been gaining national prominence and more widespread use only recently, due to the publicity received by radiation-based screening technologies in the guidelines issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Federal Government. It should not, however, be considered an alternative to mammography. Rather, it should be regarded as an adjunct to mammography, and should be offered in every woman’s regular breast health regimen. Women of all ages should employ a combination of techniques, including breast self-examination, physical examinations of the breast by a physician, thermography, mammography, HALO breast pap and sometimes ultrasound or MRI examinations, where indicated. Studies have shown that the earliest detection generally occurs when several test techniques are used in combination. The inclusion of thermography can often point out the need for more intensive examination to make a complete diagnosis.

There are more than 800 peer-reviewed breast thermography studies, in which over 250,000 women participated. Many of these studies involved very large groups of patients (from 37,000 to over 100,000) and some have followed patients for as much as 12 years. Among other conclusions, these studies found that when thermography has been added to a woman’s regular breast health checkups, a 61% increased survival rate was realized, and when used as part of a multi-modal approach (clinical examination, mammography and thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected. Since 23% of all breast cancers occur in women under the age of 49, regular breast health checkups should be undertaken by women of all ages, even those in their 20’s. It is well known that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer and that, if treated in the earliest stages, a 95% cure rate is achieved.

For optimal breast health, mammography alone may not be enough. There are additional tools for breast health screening: thermography and Halo breast pap. Halo breast pap tests for the presence of abnormal fluid in the breast ducts. The test consists of five minutes on a modified breast pump to attempt to obtain fluid. If there is any fluid present, it will be sent for further testing. The test can detect early cellular changes within the breast ducts, the area where more than 90% of breast cancer begins. Each of these tests can be provided to women of any age who are not pregnant or breast-feeding.

What to do if you are at increased risk?

Aromatase is an enzyme produced in the body that is needed for the final step in the production of estrogen as part of the hormonal cascade during which hormones are made from other hormones in a series of conversions. This enzyme converts androgen to estrogen. Aromatase is expressed at a higher level in breast cancer tissue than in benign tissue. Estrogen biosynthesis can be suppressed by the prevention of aromatase expression in breast tumors or by the inhibition of aromatase activity. Without the aromatase enzyme, excessive production of estrogen stalls. This process is what makes aromatase inhibitors effective against hormone-sensitive tumor growth.

High estrogen levels are a well-known risk for breast cancer. Many breast cancers depend on estrogen to grow. In fact, seventy per cent of diagnosed breast cancers express Estrogen Receptor alpha (ER{alpha}) and are, therefore, likely to be hormone-responsive. Apart from commercial and synthetic aromatase inhibitors, where can you find natural sources of such inhibitors?

Natural aromatase inhibitors include flavonoids, flavones, flavanones, isoflavones, resveratrol, oleuropein and linoleic acid. These are healing foods for breast cancer and other hormone-sensitive diseases.
Quercetin, Resveratrol, and Chrysin are found in PriVita, a natural aromatase inhibitor for breast health.
If you do have risk factors for breast cancer, consider a natural supplement.

Seven Ideas for reducing genital herpes, cold sores, shingles outbreaks

Herpes viruses lie dormant in body tissues and are expressed periodically, probably as a result of stress, diet, and other factors.

A national survey of the US population conducted between 1988 and 1994 found that more than one in five people over 12 had blood tests that showed evidence for infection with herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV 2), the virus typically responsible for genital herpes. This represents a 30 percent increase from 1976-1980. There is also evidence that genital infections with HSV 1, which normally causes cold sores around the mouth, are on the rise.

     Genital herpes recurrence

Recurrent episodes of genital herpes are milder and shorter in duration than initial outbreaks. However the frequency of recurrences is greater than had been thought in the past, because of asymptomatic shedding. Use of condoms as prevention Condoms are only partly protective because HSV-2 can spread by skin-to-skin contact, which could occur in areas not covered by the condom. Even when people with genital herpes don't have a visible outbreak of infection, they may be able to infect others with the virus. Archives of Internal Medicine, July 13, 2009.

What are natural things one can do?

While there is currently no cure, or immunization, to defeat herpes, there are natural measures that can ease, and possibly prevent, future outbreaks. There are herbal treatments for herpes that boost the three lines of defense against attacks by herpes. Capsuled mixtures, tinctures and teas intended for internal intake, work to enforce the immune system – the first layer of defense. This will help the body keep the outbreak down and minimize symptoms. The second layer of defense is responsible for countering stress. Emotional stress may impact immune system very badly and thus make your body more vulnerable to virus attacks. There are supportive herbs that relieve stress and therefore enable the immune system to combat the virus. Thirdly, there are herbal remedies that are used externally on affected areas and help reduce the discomfort.

     Genital Herpes in women

For women with genital herpes, taking oral contraceptives can double the likelihood of actively shedding the virus and so passing on the infection. The risk is also roughly doubled when women have bacterial vaginosis -- vaginal infection characterized by heavy discharge -- or when the vagina is colonized by group B strep.

Pomegranate- blocking herpes simplex virus replication and adsorption, enhancing immune function Resveratrol, a phytoalexin, was found to inhibit herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) replication in a dose-dependent, reversible manner. Green tea is noted for it’s anti-viral and anti-bacterial capabilities (Expert Rev Anti Infect Ther. 2007 Jun;5(3):497-506.). Studies have been conducted regarding Green Tea’s effect on Herpes, HPV, Hepatitis B, and even HIV.

     6. Maqui/Resveratrol/Acai Ultimate

This formula is an antioxidant formula that has been independently tested by Brunswick labs. It has herbal COX-2 activity and modulates inflammation. Resveratrol, a phytoalexin, was found to inhibit herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) replication in a dose-dependent, reversible manner. It contains Vitamins A,C,E and Selenium also. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is important in maintaining immune status. Vitamin C can strengthen white blood cell function and boost interferon levels. It is a free radical scavenger (Li W et al 2001) and protects tissues from oxidative stress and enhances the actions of vitamin E (De Souza MC et al 2000) Selenium (an antioxidant with immune system–boosting properties) may help suppress the reactivation of herpesviruses by increasing immunity. Acai/Resveratrol/Macqui

    Options for screening Dense Breasts

Henda's Law Early in 2011 the Texas Legislature passed a law, House Bill 2102, which went into effect September 1, 2011. The law is known as Henda’s Law. It is named after Henda Salmeron, a Dallas realtor and breast cancer survivor who was instrumental in organizing the effort to draft and pass the legislation in Texas. The law requires mammography providers to notify their patients with dense breast tissue that their mammogram may be less accurate than that of women with lower breast density. The law’s intent is to make women with dense breast tissue aware that, in addition to their annual mammogram, they may benefit from “supplemental screening” such as breast ultrasound or MRI, especially if the woman has additional risk factors for breast cancer.

Getting smart about being dense can help in early cancer detection.  Mammograms are one of the most effective tools in detecting breast cancer. In women with dense or nonfatty tissue, however, detection can be difficult and additional screening may be needed.

One Dallas woman’s personal battle with breast cancer was the inspiration for Henda’s Law – a state law signed into effect June 17 that requires women to be informed about their breast tissue’s density and the limitations of mammography in certain cases. Dr. Roshni Rao, assistant professor of surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, was Henda Salmeron’s breast surgeon whose work helped drive passage of the law.

“Breast tissue that has minimal or no fat may appear white, or dense, on a mammogram. This sometimes makes it difficult to identify cancers, which also typically appear as small white spots,” says Dr. Rao.

Radiologists use a grading system to describe the density of breast tissue based on the amount of fat (nondense) and connective (dense) tissue. Research is ongoing as to why some women have denser breast tissue but generally, as women age, their breast tissue becomes more fatty.

“Many factors contribute to a woman’s risk of breast cancer. Having dense breast tissue may be one of them, but your doctor considers other factors when evaluating your risk and tailoring your screening program,” Dr. Rao says.

Those factors may include the age at which you had your first child, family history of cancer or your age at the onset of menstruation, among others.

Starting at age 20, a yearly breast exam by a doctor is recommended. Every woman older than 40 should get screened annually. For women with dense breast tissue, digital mammograms may be better at finding cancer. Other tests – breast magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and breast thermography – also may be helpful, but only when added to mammogram results.

     Additional screening tools include:
     • Magnetic Resonance Imaging involves the use of magnets and computers to create three-dimensional images of the breasts. The scan can reveal masses and is sensitive enough to detect increased vascularization (blood vessel formation) that feeds tumors. This test can also detect tumors in dense breast tissue. They are not a first-line method of screening due to their cost.
    • The HALO Breast Pap is a noninvasive, five-minute test that analyzes breast fluid for abnormal or precancerous cells. The HALO test may be able to help determine breast cancer risks up to seven years before traditional exams would detect a lump. The HALO is recommended for both young and middle aged women (25-60). A new technology not yet well known, the HALO test is FDA approved and not covered by the majority of insurance companies, but may be reimbursed or covered by flexible spending or Health Savings accounts. Call 832-237-4200 to schedule
     • Breast Ultrasound is a noninvasive and painless procedure that uses sound waves to make a picture of the tissues inside the breast. Ultrasound is excellent at detecting and discriminating between tumors and benign cysts (fluid pockets). This method is also able to scan the whole breast instead of imaging the breast in sections. Ultrasound is particularly helpful for women who have dense breast tissue. This is because dense tissue and cancer both tend to show up as the same color on a mammogram, but are easily discernable in an ultrasound (cancer is dark and dense tissue white).

    • Thermal Imaging examines changes in the temperature and blood vessels of the breasts which show signs of possible cancer or pre-cancerous cell growth. Thermal Imaging can screen for cancer and notice physiological changes years before most other screening methods. This technology is painless and includes no bodily contact. In contrast to all the other tests, thermographic studies look at the function of the body, not its structure and therefore take an entirely different approach to detection of abnormalities. Breast Thermography is FDA approved and not covered by the majority of insurance companies, but may be reimbursed or covered by flexible spending or Health Savings accounts. Every type of breast tissue can be imaged – dense, fibrous, implants young or pre/post menopausal- with this non-invasive, painless radiation-free medical device.Call 832-237-4200 to schedule

Breast Self Exam is an exam that women perform themselves. First a physician will teach how to perform the exam and what specifically to look for. The breast self-exam includes looking at and feeling one’s breasts to detect any changes or lumps.

     BREAST DENSITY FACTS
    • 2/3 of pre-menopausal and ¼ of post menopausal women have dense breast tissue
    • Cancer is 5 times more likely in women with extremely dense breasts
    • A mammogram will find only 48% of tumors in women with the densest breasts (and therefore elude early detection)
    • Breast density is one of the strongest predictors of the failure of mammography screening to detect cancer
    • Cancer recurrence is four times more likely in women with dense breasts If a mammogram is supplemented with an ultrasound or MRI, tumor detection rate increases at least 30%

Test yourself for Familial or Sporadic Breast Cancers

Most cases of breast and ovarian cancer happen by chance and are not caused by an inherited mutated gene. For assessing the risk of sporadic (non-familial) breast cancer, there is the BREVAGen test. By combining both clinical risk factors with an individual’s genetic markers, BREVAGen provides a 5 year and lifetime percentage risk of developing breast cancer. BREVAGen™ is a first-in-class predictive risk test for sporadic breast cancer.
As a noninvasive oral swab test, BREVAGen is very easy to use in the clinic setting. The BREVAGen™ test provides information about breast cancer risk; it does not diagnose breast cancer
    • BREVAGen is currently validated in Caucasian women of European descent 35 years of age or older • The risk estimate used in this test does not take into account several other breast cancer risk factors, such as an extensive family history of breast and ovarian cancer
    • This test is used for clinical purposes http://brevagen.com/home

However, when several members of a family have developed the same type of cancer, or when individuals develop cancer at an unusually young age (less than 50), it is natural to question whether an inherited factor is involved. Having a mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene increases the risk of breast cancer far more than does any other known risk factor for this disease.
    BRCA genetic mutation
    • Causes about 10% of breast and ovarian cancer
    • Substantially increases your risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer, often before the age of 50
     • Is most often due to a mutation, or alteration, in either of 2 genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2
    • Can be inherited from either your father or your mother
    • Can be passed on to your children if you have it

If you have painful tender breasts, try an herbal supplement to reduce symptoms before your appointment for breast imaging studies.

An aromatase inhibitor/estrogen blocker formula may decrease the estrogen stimulation of breasts and make imaging the breast easier if breast stimulation and inflammation is the issue . This formula contains many aromatase inhibiting compounds, including green tea, pomegranate, resveratrol, turmeric, and astralagus.

Why men should consider Privita an herbal estrogen blocker and aromatase inhibitor

The levels of your male sex hormone, testosterone, are bound to decrease as you advancing in age. A point in your life is reached when the levels of your testosterone will fall so low that your estrogen hormones begin to dominate your physiological system. This is what is known as hormonal imbalance or estrogen dominance.

The problems caused by this imbalance can actually be easily detected as it is accompanied by many symptomatic bodily changes. A few of the symptoms of estrogen dominance include

    weight gain,
    irritation,
    alteration in moods,
depression (Note: depression caused by estrogen dominance is difficult to treat with antidepressants),
    fatigue,
    erectile dysfunction,
breast enlargement (gynecomastia or "man boobs"),
    heart disease,
    decreased libido and
    prostrate diseases

    Estrogen dominance can also cause

    urinary problems,
    impotency,
    allergies,
    diabetes,
    infertility,
    osteoporosis and
    many other types of abnormalities.

Testosterone is one of the primary male sex hormones produced in your body. A healthy male has approximately 1000 to 1200 nanograms/dl of Testosterone at the age of 20. After reaching the age of 30, however, there is a steady decline in these levels. By age 40 to 50 these levels would have significantly dropped to about 50%. Upon reaching the age of 80, the normal level of testosterone in the male body would approximate 100 to 200 nanograms/dl.

This condition is usually aggravated by environmental substances. Xenoestrogens (estrogens like substances) that can be found in the air, fuels, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, plastics, clothing, bug / mosquito sprays and personal care products are easily absorbed by your body. Since xenoestrogens are very potent and estrogen-like, they contribute further to the worsening of hormone imbalances.

There are many ways to treat the imbalance. The most natural treatment, however, begins with your diet. A diet of fish, organic fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods and raw foods maintains your body's natural inclination towards good health and systemic balance.

Using proper diet as a baseline plus adding a regimen of stress management techniques will definitely aid you in reducing sleeplessness and fatigue. This in turn will promote proper weight management and circulation, which is necessary in aiding your body in producing the necessary hormones you need to overcome estrogen dominance.

The top 11 testosterone boosting foods for men.

    1) Oysters: Protein, magnesium, lots of zinc

    The Facts:
Along with increasing your physical endurance, oysters pack more zinc than almost any other food source just six gives you almost seven times the RDA and zinc plays a key role in muscle growth and testosterone levels.

    How much:
Eat a serving of oysters once a week, raw, cooked or canned but never fried.

    2) Lean Beef: Protein, iron, magnesium, zinc, saturated fat

    The Facts:
Few things have as positive an impact on testosterone levels as lean meats. Beef specifically offers the added benefit of high protein and zinc two nutrients key to optimizing testosterone and muscle-building potential in one source. And while you don’t want too much saturated fat in your diet, you require some to produce testosterone.

    How much:
Grill or broil a lean cut of steak a few times a week. I love Top Sirloin!

    3) Beans: Protein, fiber, zinc

    The Facts:
Beans are indeed the magical fruit. Beans pack a bigger shot of zinc than any other member of the veggie family; some (like baked beans) even rival the zinc content of red meat. Add that to a food that’s high in protein and fiber and low in fat, and you have a winning combo.

    How much:
Baked beans, lima beans, navy beans and kidney beans are all good choices. Canned versions are as nutritious as dry!

    4) Poultry: Protein and little fat

    The Facts:
High-protein diets have a positive impact on muscle mass and thus testosterone levels and high fat seems to have the opposite effect. So while chicken and turkey lack high zinc levels, their protein-to-fat ratios make them important to your diet.

    How much:
Roast or grill skinless, boneless portions of turkey or chicken several times a week.

    5) Eggs: Protein and cholesterol

    The Facts:
Testosterone is synthesized from cholesterol, and as such, food containing cholesterol is a good source of building blocks for testosterone. Eggs are a source of pure, unadulterated cholesterol, and one recent study showed that the excess cholesterol in eggs isn’t as harmful as previously thought. So stock up on whole eggs (unless otherwise instructed by your physician). Or use the liquid egg whites!

    How much:
Start your day with 3-4 whole eggs cooked in olive oil or fat-free cooking spray. The amount of eggs you eat also depends on your goals, body weight etc.

    6) Cottage Cheese: (1% Milk Fat)Protein with very little fat

    The Facts:
One cup of 1% cottage cheese has more protein and less fat than a serving of lean beef or chicken. Have it as a snack or with a meal for testosterone-boosting potential.

    How much:
Eat 1 cup of cottage cheese each day

    7) Broccoli: Indole-3-carbinol, fiber

Eat cruciferous veggies. Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage yields compounds called indoles that help lower certain estrogens, which in turn can help reduce estrogen’s inhibitory effects on testosterone production.

    The Facts:
Elevated estrogen levels lead to fat accumulation and can interfere with muscle growth. In a clinical study, indole-3-carbinol cut the largely female hormone estradiol in half for men. Broccoli contains high levels of indoles, food compounds that help reduce bad estrogen.

    How much:
Eat as many servings of broccoli as you can stomach.

    8) Cabbage: Indole-3-carbinol, fiber

    The Facts:
In addition to exhibiting the same estradiol-restricting properties as other cruciferous vegetables, cabbage is high in fiber. Fiber is great for controlling weight, as it prevents the consumption of fattier foods. Keeping weight down has an anti-estrogen impact.

    How much:
Load up that fat-free brat with sauerkraut and have a side of slaw just go easy on the mayo.

    9) Brussels Sprouts: Indole-3-carbinol, fiber

    The Facts:
You should have listened to your mom: Brussels sprouts do help you grow up big and strong. Like the other vegetables on our list, these specifically target bad estrogen and pack just as much fiber.

    How much:
Hold your nose and power them down. Good luck!

    10) Garlic: Allicin

    The Facts:
In clinical studies, garlic’s active ingredient enhances testosterone levels and inhibits cortisol, a hormone that competes with testosterone, limiting its actions and breaking down muscle tissue.

    How much:
Season other foods with garlic when you can, but eating whole cloves provides the most direct benefit.

    11. Fruits
Fruits such as blueberries, apples, pineapples and citrus fruits all contain vitamin C, which is thought to moderate and improve testosterone levels. Tomatoes, which are also considered a fruit, contain large amounts of vitamin A, which helps with the normal functioning of the reproductive system. Eliminate grapefruit from your diet, as it is thought to impair the functioning of the liver's breakdown of estrogen.

    12. Asparagus is rich in vitamin E, which is considered to stimulate the production of sex hormones (testosterone) and may be important for a healthy sex life.

Good libido food for both female and male libido levels

    13. Avocado contain high levels of folic acid, helping to metabolize proteins. They also contain vitamin B6, helpful in increasing male hormone production. In addition potassium is found in avocado which aids in regulating the female thyroid gland, this helps enhance female libido levels.

    14. Figs are high in amino acids, which researchers believe can increase libido. It has also been found that Figs can also increase your sexual stamina.

The Basics On How To Eat For A Huge Testosterone Boost

Stick to the ratio: Men should aim for 45% of calories from protein, 35% from carbs and 20% from fats. As you put daily menus together, these numbers will help you maintain this diet.

Avoid high-glycemic carbs: Carb-rich foods high on the glycemic index can negatively affect your testosterone levels.

Think protein & fats: High-protein and moderate-fat foods are crucial for enhancing testosterone and, as a result, building muscle. Make these foods the building blocks of your diet!

Drink a protein and carb shake after working out. Consuming proteins and carbs after training has been shown to increase the amount of testosterone that enters muscle cells, where it can increase muscle growth. Take 20-40 grams of whey protein and 40-100 grams of simple carbohydrates post-workout.

    1. What is an anti-estrogen and where does it come from?

An anti-estrogen, simply put, is an estrogen blocker. Males and females have two major hormones in the body that is estrogen and testosterone.

Guys have more testosterone and girls have more estrogen. Unfortunately for guys, estrogen carrys a strong signal to the pituitary gland in the brain, which controls your "on" and "off" switch for testosterone production.

What happens when estrogen levels rise higher than normal in males, the body's testosterone production lowers, which is NOT a good thing when you are trying to build and pack on muscle!

    2. What do anti-estrogen products do?

Anti-estrogen products again, help stop the production of estrogen in the body. This is very critical and important due to the fact that estrogen is testosterones enemy! A study done in Europe showed athletes who supplemented chrysin had a dramatic testosterone increase of 30% in their blood serum levels!

Along with chrysin, another potent and important ingredient that helps suppress estrogen is green tea extract.

It may also contribute to improvements in fat loss in addition to other benefits

Privita includes resveratrol, pomegranate, green tea, quercetin, chrysin, nutgrass, white turmeric, and astralagus so it has high antioxidant activity, as well as aromatase inhibitor and estrogen blocking activity.

What we do know is that estrogen does promote the development of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Estrogen stimulates the cells in the tissue surrounding the prostate, leading to urinary symptoms associated with prostate disease (Eur J Cancer. 2008; 44(7):928-36). Furthermore, in one study, BPH patients were found to have greater estradiol levels than those without BPH (Urology.2007; 69(4):708-13).

While some studies show that there is no relationship between serum estradiol and prostate cancer, this may be explained by the fact that prostate cells produce their own estradiol locally. Estradiol may be high around the prostate, but it may not show up in a blood test. Local synthesis of estrogen has been thought to play a role in prostate cancer development (Minerva Endocrinol. 2006; 31(1):1-12).

Dr. Jonathan Wright states in his article that prostate cancer development and andropause (male menopause, wherein testosterone levels decrease and estrogen levels increase) are associated. This may be because when men reach andropause, the ratio of estrogens to androgens can reach up to 40%. He recommends that men avoid regular soy consumption as this can potentially increase estrogen.

PriVita can be helpful to restore normal estrogen and testosterone levels in men.

Hyperaromatization of testosterone, where an enzyme called aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen, is a key contributor to estrogen dominance. Clinical studies show that PriVita works as a natural aromatase inhibitor that reduces estradiol and estrone in both men and women. PriVita prevents the conversion of testosterone into unhealthy estrogens (estradiol and estrone) making more testosterone available, and leads to the unhindered production of more beneficial estrogen (estriol) from progesterone, DHEA, and other hormones.

Prostate cancer... herbal thoughts. Click here

Prostate cancer, meaning cancer of the prostate gland, is a common adenocarcinoma in men. The probability of getting prostate cancer rises with age. It is generally treated by surgically removing the small prostate gland or with radiation. It is generally detected by high PSA levels and/or by surgical biopsies.

Inhibiting angiogenesis alone can be effective in some cases of cancer. But for breast and prostate cancer, addition of an aromatase inhibitor may prove to be a more effective regimen because many aspects of the cancer are being targeted at the same time. First, the formation of blood vessels that feed the tumor is prevented. Second, by precluding the action of aromatase, estrogen production is greatly diminished, helping prevent the proliferation of tumor cells.

Treatment with either an angiogenesis or an aromatase inhibitor by itself certainly has merit. But combining both therapies, particularly for estrogen-responsive diseases like breast and prostate cancer, has such tremendous potential success that it should be considered as a complementary treatment.

Although aromatase activity has been detected in malignant prostate cancer tissues, the use of aromatase inhibitors as standard prostate cancer treatment is not yet considered the norm. But they are currently being explored as potential therapy because of emerging research linking aromatase expression, estrogen dominance and prostate cancer.
PriVita is an herbal product designed with estrogen blocking and aromatase inhibition in mind. It contains resveratrol, pomegranate, green tea, turmeric and many other antioxidant ingredients. Resveratrol works through more than a dozen different anticancer mechanisms and selectively targets cancer cells. This single supplement modulates hormones, has several mechanisms that stop cancer cells from multiplying, and even has the ability to destroy cancer cells. One remarkable aspect of resveratrol is that it can be very toxic to cancer cells but does not harm healthy cells; in fact, a person taking resveratrol for protection against prostate cancer may receive cardiovascular benefits as a side effect. Another important aspect of resveratrol is that it may be combined with other phytofactors to potentially enhance its effects. Resveratrol naturally occurs with other polyphenols such as quercetin in plants such as grapes. Pomegranate juice An antioxidant that delays rise in PSA (doubling time indicating tumor growth), as well as helping promote penile blood flow to reduce erectile dysfunction. Indole-3-Carbinol An anti-cancer compound found in cruciferous vegetables that decreases the risk of developing cancer. Green Tea Boosts immune system and induces prostate cancer programmed cell death (apoptosis)

    Shrinking Fibroids

There are all-natural herbal formula that can support the reduction of estrogen through Chinese herbs.
Aromatase is a key enzyme in the synthesis of estrogen. Specifically, it converts androstenedione into estrone and testosterone into estradiol. For instance, evidence shows that breast cancer and prostate cancer tissues overexpress aromatase. Inhibiting aromatase, therefore, plays an important role in suppressing the deleterious action of estrogen on hormone related conditions. This is why Myomin is so helpful in uterine fibroids and other high estrogen disorders such as endometriosis.

An in vivo study demonstrated that Myomin inhibits the aromatase enzyme in the ectopic endometrium and ovarian tissue of rats. Aromatase was expressed markedly in the untreated ectopic endometrium of the positive control group. On the other hand, aromatase expression significantly decreased in the ectopicendometrium of the Myomin group after 28 days.

Similar to the ectopic endometrium tissue, aromatase expression was remarkably high in the untreated ovaries of the positive control group. After 28 days of therapy with Myomin, aromatase expression was significantly reduced in the ovarian tissue.

Image analysis of both the ectopic endometrium and ovarian tissues yielded elevated aromatase expression in the positive control group (108.9 and 149.8,respectively) in both tissues. After administration with Myomin for 28 days, aromatase expression reduced to 34.7 in the endometrium and 47.0 in the ovary. This translates to a 100% reduction of aromatase expression in the endometrium and an 85.6% reduction in the ovary compared to the negative control group.

    Myomin has three functions:

Myomin inhibits the aromatase enzyme, effectively reducing estradiol levels by preventing the conversion of androgens to estrone and estradiol. This allows testosterone and estriol (the good estrogen) to accumulate. Aromatase inhibition has become a worthwhile target in many estrogen-dominant disorders
Myomin competes with estradiol at the estrogen receptors. This function is particularly effective in cases where estrogen receptors are fully stimulated (e.g. after HRT). Competing with estradiol prevents estradiol from binding to receptors. As a result, proliferation of cells is avoided and abnormal growth inhibited.
Myomin increases interferon (IFN) and interleukin-2 (IL-2). IL-2 induces the proliferation of immune cells, enhancing the body's ability to kill tumor cells. IFN stimulates natural killer cells and is active against tumors.
    Myomin Reduces Estradiol Levels

One study performed at the Shanghai Medical School illustrates the effect of Myomin on estradiol levels of mice during pregnancy – a period when estradiol levels are especially high. Two groups of 12 mice each were used in the study. One group was used as the control. The other group was given Myomin beginning 15 days into pregnancy. Three days later (on the 18 th day of the study), the average estradiol level of the Myomin group was 7.22pg/ml, approximately seven times less than the control group. After 6 days of taking Myomin (on the 21 st day of the study), their average estradiol level was 8.81pg/ml while it was 85.98 pg/ml for the control group.

In another study, 90 female mice were divided into three groups. Each group was then given Myomin for 30, 60 and 180 days, respectively. The average estradiol levels after each period was 50.6, 36.6, and 32.4 pg/ml, respectively. After 180 days, the estradiol level stabilized. These results demonstrate long-term use of Myomin reduces estradiol in such a way that it maintains around the normal level. No side effects were reported in this study.

A human study involved 60 postmenopausal women with cysts and/or fibroids. Postmenopausal women were studied because their estradiol levels are more stable than those of premenopausal women. Initially, the average estradiol level was 74.52 pg/ml. After only 10 days on Myomin, their average estradiol level reduced to 38.84 pg/ml. The fibroids, cysts and associated pain gradually reduced.

    Myomin and Estrogen Dominant Disorders

A study from Chang Hai Hospital involved 75 cases of fibrocystic breasts (70 women ages 18 to 52 years old and 5 men ages 62 to 64 years old). Sixty five percent of the women were under 35 years old. 25 cases were in the control group while 50 cases were in the Myomin group. Results of the study revealed that, in 14 cases, the fibrocystic breast completely cleared after 1 month of taking Myomin while, in 16 cases, the fibrocystic breast reduced 50% in size. Among the five men in the study, the cysts cleared completely in 3 cases. Overall, the effectiveness rate of Myomin is more than 60%, compared to the control group's 12% rate. In the Myomin group, in 48 out of 50 cases, associated pain cleared or tremendously reduced (p value <0.05) while in the control group, pain reduced in only 12 out of 25 cases. A 1994 clinical study was conducted on 255 patients with ovarian cysts and endometriosis. After 5 months, Myomin was effective on 147 patients (57%) while some improvements was observed in 87 patients (34.1%). No effect was observed in only 21 patients. Another study was conducted on both pre- and postmenopausal women with ovarian cysts. In one study from the Chang Hai Hospital in Shanghai, China, 85 female patients with ovarian cysts were involved, with ages ranging from 27to 64 years old (more than 50% of them between 34 and 45 years old). Out of the 85, 40 cases were related to endometriosis (hyatidiform cyst), 44 cases were simple ovarian cysts and 1 was a case of ovarian cancer. After 1 to 3 courses of the herbal formula, the cysts and symptoms of 15 patients completely cleared with no recurrence 3 months after the study. In 34 patients, the size of the cyst reduced by 50% and some of the associated symptoms were relieved. Y. Dikansky, DDS from NY, has a 38 year old female patient with an ovarian cyst for 8 years. The cyst was 3.7x6x2. After 3 months on Myomin, the cyst cleared. A 2000 study at the Shanghai Medical School was performed on 60 patients with small uterine fibroids. It revealed that if Myomin is used in combination with Revivin, it is 69.2% effective on uterine fibroids that exceed 2.5cm³ in size. Another alternative would be to combine Myomin with Angiostop, an angiogenesis inhibitor.

The potential applications of aromatase inhibitors in many health conditions are continually increasing. They have been shown to reduce the risk of recurrent breast cancer, especially when used for a longer period. However, the aromatase inhibitor drugs in the market today are indicated for postmenopausal women only. This is very limiting especially since more and more premenopausal women are developing estrogen-related conditions. It is for this reason that the results of these studies on Myomin are significant. As stated before, Myomin has been used in clinical studies and found to be effective in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women with ovarian cysts, fibrocystic breast and endometriosis as well as in men with fibrocystic breast. It is able to produce these favourable results by inhibiting aromatase and consequently reducing estrogen levels.

    Myomin and Men: More Information:
Aromatase inhibition is important in men as well. As men age, testosterone is being more readily converted to estrogen through the aromatase enzyme. Increased estrogen levels can lead to problems such as prostate cancer, prostatitis, and even gynecomastia. Evidence suggests that local aromatase expression in the prostate increases malignancy. In fact, the level of aromatase expression in malignant prostate tissue is comparable to that in breast cancer tissue. As a result, local estrogen levels are also promoted at the prostate tumor site, increasing growth. Aromatase inhibitors like Myomin will help block the action of aromatase, thereby minimizing the depletion of testosterone and reducing estrogen levels.

Myomin for Relief of Menopausal Symptoms

Myomin has also been reported to be effective in reducing the severity and frequency of hot flashes in some women. Although its exact mechanism on this particular function remains to be elucidated, it may be explained by Myomin's ability to compete with estrogen at the cells' estrogen receptors. It should be noted, however, that some women experience worsening of symptoms with Myomin. This is probably due to very low levels of estrogen in these women.

    Myomin for Abdominal Fat

An aromatase inhibitor like Myomin can also reduce abdominal fat. Abdominal obesity is associated with decreased testosterone levels (or hypogonadism) and increased estradiol levels. Hypogonadism leads to the deposition of fat in the abdomen. As fat accumulates, aromatase activity increases at the site, causing more testosterone to be converted into estradiol. Taking testosterone or DHEA supplements is not enough because if aromatase is uncontrolled, then testosterone and DHEA will eventually be converted to estradiol. Adding anaromatase inhibitor like Myomin blocks the action of aromatase, effectively preventing the testosterone from being converted into estradiol.
